What's your favourite toy?

October 15th 2006 05:34
There are plenty of fads that come and go in kids’ toys but then there are those toys and games that seem to hang around for generations. Barbie, Lego, Monopoly, Twister. These are the most popular toys of the last 100 years from Forbes:

• 1900-1909 Crayola Crayons
• 1910-1919 Raggedy Ann Dolls
• 1920-1929 Madame Alexander Collectible Dolls
• 1930-1939 View-Master 3-D Viewer
• 1940-1949 Candy Land
• 1950-1959 Mr. Potato Head
• 1960-1969 G.I. Joe
• 1970-1979 Rubik's Cube
• 1980-1989 Cabbage Patch Kids
• 1990-1999 Beanie Babies
• 2000-Now Razor Scooter

What was your favourite toy as a kid? Is it still around and would you buy it for your own kids?

Firstly, just to put a time frame on my experience, I was a kid during the 60s. Even back then I didn't like many of the 'faddy' toys that were on offer.

We had a council ditch out of the front of our house. Our house was at the very edge of the town, and the council ditch continued on for miles beyond our house. In winters (before global warming) it would rain (even pour) for weeks on end. My favourite toy (if you can call it a toy) was a Paddle Pop stick (Paddle Pops in those days were called Polar Bars). My mate and I would just put a Polar Bar stick each in the council ditch, and then run after them both for miles to see who won the great boat race ... and who ended up the first boat to reach the local sewerage dam ...

Wow, you were easily pleased then. No mile long list to Santa? That's great. I love your story. Did you ever have trouble keeping track of whose Polar Bar stick was whose? (I think they should have stuck with the name Polar Bar sticks BTW).

Q: What did the kid say to his grandpa when he fell in the river?

A: Paddle Pop.

Sorry, bad joke but it just sprung to mind ...
