Five Things you can do with Vita-brits – Besides Eating Them

March 21st 2007 23:53
Princess Toddler has not eaten Vita-brits for several months. Being as toddlers are, she used to love them, then she suddenly refused to let the cereal anywhere near her lips. But after showing an interest in my cornflakes I gave them another go last week, and lo and behold they’re back on the toddler menu.

I was cheering that I could get Princess Toddler to devour them once more, especially as I struggle to get milk into her (she totally refuses to drink it from a cup). The only issue is that I had forgotten how sticky and messy the damn things are. Nothing gets all over a toddler, chairs, tables, floors, doors, windows, parents, like Vita-brits. And if I don’t manage to wipe the sticky mess away quickly it solidifies like cement, seemingly never to be removed again.

There were many occasions when Princess Toddler was a baby and I thought I’d successfully removed all traces of the cereal. Only to find one we went out in the daylight that there were many remnants stuck to her face, hands, arms – and sometimes legs and tummy. One woman even said to me once that her skin looked dry. I embarrassedly replied that no, her skin is great, they are Vita-brits stuck to her eyelids.

So I have come up with some better, and more successful, uses for Vita-brits. Here they are:

1. Building a house? Vita-brits make excellent mortar between bricks. Just scrape onto a brick with a trowel, place another brick on top and allow to set.

2. Does your hat from keep blowing off in the wind? Stick a spoonful of Vita-brits on top of your head and press your hat on (NB. You will need some good quality shampoo to get the Vita-brits out of your hair afterwards).

3. Broken toys lying around, yet to be fixed? Vita-brits will stick anything together – dolls, trucks, books. It’s much stronger and more durable than super glue or araldite.

4. Sick of getting junk mail, despite your ‘no junk mail’ sticker that’s clearly visible on your letterbox? Fill your newspaper section of the letterbox with Vita-brits – no one will have the strength to get junk mail through this wall of steel. (NB. Be sure not to let any get into the letter slot or you’ll end up without genuine mail too).

5. Do you have a gossipy neighbour who constantly drops in unannounced? Place a spoonful of Vita-brits in your neighbour’s coffee next time he/she pops by. Your neighbour’s lips will be sealed shut after several mouthfuls.

LOL.... hilarious! the title caught me on this one and it didn`t disappoint! Ug they are certainly messy things for littlies to get their hands stuck into... have you seen that ad with the dad and his toddler where he is teaching him to bowl at the fridge? For some reason this immediatley came to mind as I was reading your post!

Hi Ash,

I'm glad you got a laugh out of it. I haven't seen that ad, but sounds like one I could definitely relate to!

Candice,

*lol*

reminds me again of earlier days and taste bud changes... they will happen you know.. throughout all the time they are with you.. right up to the time they leave.

Their tastes are emerging and want to try new things... Outside of the basic fruit and veg diet, with cheeses and some meats : I made it a point to buy new 'everything,' each week in order for them to develop their own tastes and to encourage them to find what suited their bodies... I mean we aren't all the same are we.

For example, my eldest won't eat leeks, but loves fennel and zucchini. The youngest loves leeks but won't eat fennel. She pukes at Zuchhini, but adores carrots. They all like stone fruit and bananas, green beans and peas *lol*

In brekky cereals I always bought the healthier ones (if there is such a thing?)... after trying them all, the eldest now eats wholemeal toast and peanut botter for brekky and the youngest likes a yoghurt and fresh fruit with me.

You can never tell where it's going to go with the meat department except that sausages are off again now for quite a while, whilst roast beef is back on the menu again? We're all off chicken again, after my article on envirowarrior. *cringe*

Gouda and Edam are the cheeses of the month : ooh and Camenbert. My eldest tells me that it's nicer than Brie (I can't taste the difference?)

One constant throughout has been red grapes, no one has ever liked them. We all prefer the light green ones. Ooh except for the small dark Datsume's that we grow ourselves... mmmm, they are Sweeeeet.

Food for thought perhaps?

Lilla ...

PS I love suggestion No 4 and 5 above. I'd give Princess toddler a break and mush some banana for a while...?

Hi Lilla,

Variety's the spice of life as they say. My daughter's very much like that. She'll eat something non-stop for a few months then go off it completely, then back on it again. I just have to be vigilant with offering new and varied foods. Sometimes, I have to admit, I get a bit slack with that side of things.

Thanks for the ideas, I struggle to get my daughter to eat vegies, though she loves fruit. Corn and spinach are the only things I can get into her - the rest are usually hidden in things like having grated carrot in burgers etc.

We are growing strawberries at the moment and she loves picking them and eating them. She also helps me pick herbs to put in the cooking - parsley is a favourite.

I am looking at joining this co-op that sends you a box of fruit and veg each week and you get a mixture of things depending on what's available and seasonal. I'm liking this idea because it will get me to try out more things. Hopefully they'll give me a call back in the next couple of days.

Camembert and Brie. Yum! I love them - although I can't tell the difference between them either. Do you know when kids can start having soft cheeses? I know babies can't but I'm always excessively cautious with these things.

The latest on the cereal is apricots. She absolutely loves them. Will try the mashed banana too - she loves them!
